Pattern Swatches

Since I didn't have a chance to show Yang how I did the pattern swatches because of a computer malfunction, I decided to post how to do it on the blog. It is a very simple yet powerful way of adding patterned backgrounds to objects.

Our Photo Bucket site...coming soon

We need to start getting some of your work on the web - here's the Flickr site from last semester, FYI.

The Coolest Beer Commercial Ever!

Motionographer.com has really cool things to look at every now and then, and yesterday I found a really cool commercial that does some wonky things with perspective, but I think it's relevant to our perspective project nonetheless.

Check it out!

Adobe Illustrator Perspective

I noticed that there were pre-set perspective grids in Adobe CS5. Not sure if it works for CS4 or other versions.

Video tutorial for the Photoshop CS4 Vanishing Point Tool

http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/video_workshop/?id=vid0019

Photoshop Intro

Photoshop Intro

* Open the sample image _MG1716.jpg in Course Folder>Public>Project 3 and Save on Local Data

* Check out the Photoshop work space, Toolbar, and Menu Bar - there's a lot of similarity to Illustrator

* With your image open, explore Photoshop by doing some of the following:

* Save As .tiff

* Open Layers window and Unlock Layer by double clicking on lock icon

* Create a New Layer

* Working in Layer 0, do some editing of the image:

* In the Image Menu change the Canvas Size to 11 x 8

* In the Image Menu play with all of the Image Adjustments to get an introduction to editing color, contrast, and other effects

* Go to the Tool Bar and look through the tools - I'm particularly interested in you using the Pen Tool and other tools that will make a path.

* Try drawing a path (around some image detail) with the Pen Tool or Magnetic Lasso or other tool and then go to the Path dialog box and select Make Selection - when you have pixels selected, Copy and Paste the selection to make a new part of this industrial architecture.

* Also, look into Photoshop Help and play with the Eyedropper, Clone Stamp, and Eraser tools and explore some Filters - particularly Blur - and in the Edit menu, play with Free Transform and the functions within Transform

* Copy images from another image and Paste into Photoshop and Copy an object from Illustrator and Paste as Smart Object or Pixels.

* Finally, Save with Layers as .tiff or .psd so we can all see your 'creation' on Monday

Here are the links I've collected on my Digital Design Foundations Delicious account - I think the CG Textures might be useful - you'll probably have to sign up for a free account.

The Penn Library Online Image Collection is also useful.

Here is the Flickr site from last summer's class. Very similar projects - image above is from the space, perspective, memory project.

The Secret Life of Plants

This is a 1979 new-agey documentary about the perceptual abilities of plants. It was an early example of time-lapse film making of plants, to show sped-up growth of plants.

The all-instrumental soundtrack was done by Stevie Wonder, and was one of the first albums to be recorded digitally. He also used one of the first digital synthesizers for a lot of the music.

I found the entire film on Google Video. I think there's some cool stuff in here about consciousness and nature, not to mention the representation of nature using digital And analog technology--like what we're doing!

Not sure I believe all of the ideas in here, but its an interesting exercise in thinking about the inner world of plants.
